Halloween Costume Continued.

So far, this is what I have come up with. It's not 100% what Katy Perry is wearing, but It's kinda close. I'm going to make the corset for this pattern with the fabric under it. The fabric is a bit more tinklerbell than lime green, but whatevs. It has glitter in it. I was excited.
More to follow. I'm cutting out the pattern now and I should have tons of fabric left for the skirt. Polka dotted heels okay? They never really show her feet. I also bought fabric to make the veil she's wearing. Including large rosettes which I probably could've made myself and am still debating about returning.

Halloween Costume Idea

So I've decided to be Katy Perry and Elmo for Halloween. The idea was for it to be a couples costume. With the guy wearing this:
or even something like this

and me wearing something similar to Katy Perry's outfit from this video:

Except I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to ride solo on this one, so I need to buy an elmo doll.

Regardless, I had to figure out what the green dress looks like from top to bottom, so this is the sketch I've come up with so far.

Well I couldn't find a lime green corset, and I'm not sure about all the chiffon-y-ness that is going on in the back, but hopefully I'll be able to come up with something close. I'm not sure about the neckline either. What kind of sheer material to use for the front? I'll let you know updates.

Sugarlips

Recently, I've been hearing about this product called "Sugarlips." Apparently it is a one size fits most tank top. They are made of 95% nylon and 5% spandex. So how these girls are wearing them through the summer, I'm not entirely sure. They come in like 48 colors. The new thing is to layer them so you can see a bunch of different colors. Which I'm not sure how this is a new thing, but whatever, I'll just roll with it. They sell these things for $14/tank which is a decent price, I suppose. The camis at my store are $12 which are thicker and overall a nicer cami than the ones at forever 21 which you can get for like $2? I think.

I don't know when I fell behind the times for such a fashion trend, but apparently this is what happens when you leave school.

Check them out. Let me know what you think.

Skinnys and Jeggings for Fall.

Skinny Jeans are back and seem to be here to stay. I used to think that only girls who were 6ft and 110lbs could pull off the skinnys, but I'm starting to really love my skinnys. They make my butt look awesome. lol. I want to say that dark skinnys are the thing, but I've noticed skinnies in like every other color, too. These and leggings are great for showing off Fall Boots! I just bought some awesome, incredibly expensive (for me) leather boots from DSW. I wouldn't have fall without them! Now it's just a matter of breaking them in. Anyway, Skinnys! Buy your skinnys! If not skinnys, but some jeggings. They're must more comfortable skinny jeans. They have a little more give than the skinnys and they are not always necessarily cotton leggings with a jean look. I'm not going to lie, this is what I thought jeggings were at first and I would make fun of them so bad. But after shopping around, I realized some of them look just like jeans but are purely more comfortable.

Update -- September 25
I bought my first pair of jeggings and I absolutely love them!!

Diploma

Since my last post, I landed a job at the department store. I work in the juniors department as a salesperson. Fortunately, this company is awesome because it has lots of opportunities for advancement. I'm not sure I'll be sticking around long enough to be advanced, but at least there is that option. I'm actually doing well which is nice. I'm not doing as well as I would hope, but well nonetheless.

Also, since my last post, I finally received my diploma! I'm so excited! I mean it doesn't get me much further than I am now, but it's so exciting to finally get that piece of paper.

Now, my goal is SAVE SAVE SAVE my money. I want to be living on my own. Apparently, I might need to buy a new car soon. And I'd also like to buy some things like Adobe CS5 and a sewing machine.

So hopefully next post will bring some good news!! :)

Compromise.

So I need a job. Preferably full-time with benefits and such.

So I emailed my store manager from last year when I interned at a department store to see if I could use her as a reference for a design job for the department store. Unfortunately, between emails, I just found out they picked someone else for the job due to my lack of experience. There's a surprise.

The compromise? I might start working at the department store I interned at last year. She asked me if I wanted to be an assistant manager. This store offers benefits and a 401k. And I wouldn't be starting out as just a sales person. The only thing that makes me nervous is that I have no experience on the sales floor at this store. Last year I interned on the support end of the store versus the sales end of things. However, I was trained with all the other girls with how to use the registers, and how to interact with customers.

So, the next step is calling the store manager to see what she's got for me.

If I could just get rid of the sick. ugh.

PS. Can't stay away from college, so I'm heading up to Morgantown tomorrow to visit. Should be fun.

Post-grad continues...

So, this job search thing is getting frustrating. However, I will admit that because it's summer, I've been a little more lackadaisical about my job search as I probably will in the coming months. There are so many things at home that are making it hard to want to leave.
This is a poor excuse to keep living with my parents working my high school job, which is why I must make a conscious effort to find something whether it be an internship or a real job.
I quit the dead-end non-paid internship about a month ago. In case you were wondering. This actually made a huge difference in my summer. My mood is incredibly different.
I'm also thinking about going to grad school for graphic design. I just don't have any money right now. And I want to get some fashion under my belt before I resort to a field that everyone is trying to do with little hopes of a job.
So, that's where I am now. But while I am frustrated, I'm still happy and anxiously awaiting my diploma. :)

Not quite real life.

So, I thought graduating would be a huge milestone. I thought I might feel grown up, or full of knowledge. You know, like the scare crow in Wizard of Oz, "If I only had a brain," and the wizard gives him a degree.

Unfortunately, this is not yet the case. I live at home with my parents, you know, like I did in high school. I'm working the same job I've worked since I was 15 (which would be fine except I have no long term future there). And I'm working what feels like a dead-end non-paid internship. Last year, I had an amazing PAID internship where I was guaranteed 40 hours a week. I got free stuff. Each and every one of us felt important. I got certificates, pamphlets and more direction than I needed. I miss it.

So, needless to say, I have not been able to work on stuff. Nor, would I know what to work on. Maybe I'll start sketching while I'm at work and scan things in for here. Then people (in which a majority are not reading this) can tell me what things they like and don't like.

For now, I have to go to bed. Good Night, World.

Ending College.

Graduation is in three days. I guess now that it's past midnight, it's technically two days! This has been the fast four years of my life! I've meet some of my favorite people, and I've learned a lot. I am actually bored in Morgantown now that school is over. I'm pretty sure I'm the only person left living in my building. Everyone else has either moved out or moved home for the summer.

This year my department hired a new teacher, which I was ecstatic about because I got to learn a lot of new techniques. This year I took draping, couture techniques and a digital portfolio class. All were very beneficial to me as a designer. And, they all will hopefully land me a job. I've already landed a sweet design internship close to my home in Montgomery County, MD. I start in just about two weeks, and I'm very excited. Stay tuned!

PS. My mom sent pictures of my McRuffle Dress (below) to one of her breast cancer survivor friends and they could not stop talking about it at the Newsbabes for Breast Cancer Bash in Georgetown on Monday. A woman who runs a public relations firm told my mom to have me give this woman a call. So, I'll probably call her when I get back to Maryland, and we'll see how that goes.
